Over the years, we have witnessed many tragic love stories, but Monica Bedi’s love affair with the most notorious mobster in the underworld, Abu Salem, is nothing short of a movie of Bollywood. Salem had tried his luck in different tasks before joining the underworld, Don Dawood, in his criminal activities. He is said to have been the mastermind behind the Mumbai explosion in 1993 which killed 257 people. Thus, he was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special court under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act.

All is fair in love and war, they say. While Abu Salem had been talked about, some chapters of the book of his life are still secret. One of the most controversial chapters is his romance with Bollywood actress, Monica Bedi. Reportedly, Bedi was the apple of his eye and the two were madly in love with each other. Even Monica was so in love with him that she left everything in India and went to see him to spend the rest of her life with the gangster.

Monica was madly in love with Abu Salem so much that she was oblivious to his dark secrets. However, gradually she realized that her boyfriend was someone powerful, but it was only after he was arrested in Portugal that she learned exactly what Abu had done. Speaking of the same, she shared:

“When I read the indictment against him in Portugal – the penalties, the serious offences, the loss of people…it was heartbreaking. Not that I didn’t know he was fleeing the authorities. But everything was spelled out on paper. It opened my eyes.”

Monica also revealed that people accused her of being a gold digger, but in real life she was going through a lot of hardships at that time. She had also spoken of the struggles she had faced while being in a relationship with the terrorist. Monica said:

“Abu had money. So people believed that I was living like a princess. But I only had hard times and I struggled with him. I learned cooking from him. If I witnessed a good life, it was only with my parents or with my hard-earned money. People said: “She is with him for money”. But where is the money? do not regret the difficulties; it was only his nature that had become aggressive and irritable. I wondered why I was dragged into the mess.

In an interview with Showtime magazine, Monica revealed that she received a call from a man, asking her to perform at an event in Dubai in 1988. She added that she started talking to him after a few phone calls, and didn’t know she was talking to mob don, Abu Salem. Sharing that he introduced himself as Arsalan Ali, the actress said:

“I didn’t know he was Abu Salem. In fact, even if he had told me he was Abu Salem, I would have had no idea. I had only heard of Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel. He introduced himself to me as Arsalan Ali — that’s the false identity he often used. He also got caught in Portugal for that identity. If he used his real name, he would have been taken a long time ago.
