We review a purse-shaped toastie maker

Buried in the back of one of my kitchen cupboards is a toasted sandwich maker. If I remember correctly, it belonged to my wife’s grandmother, so I guess you could call it an heirloom.

To be fair, it does a pretty good job of baking a toastie, so we never needed to buy another one. And it would take a braver man than me to suggest that we get rid of something of such dubious sentimental value.

But I may have found a way around it. Salter kitchen specialists have launched a toastie maker that is shaped like a handbag. It found favor with cooking legend Nigella Lawson in the original black and rose gold color, and now it’s also available in pink.

A pink toast machine? This will surely convince the woman to abandon our ancient relic and adapt to the times.

Luckily, it’s not just a novelty. Salter knows a thing or two about kitchen tech, so there’s a 750w, 200C powerhouse lurking beneath that pretty exterior.

And, I have to say, it does a much better job of making a grilled sandwich than our antique device. There’s more space for modern bread slices and the mechanism cuts through crusts more cleanly.

I also like the two power indicators, in the shape of a small arc, which let you know when it is on and when it is at temperature.

The price for all this glamour? Well the pink is just under £30 on Amazon at the moment, but if you prefer black and rose gold, which is arguably a bit more ‘chic’, then it’s on offer for £17.99. Which is an absolute bargain in my book.

Will that be enough to lure my wife away from her beloved Breville? No chance. But I can see us no longer having to “queue” for our toast, as the two will no doubt now work in tandem. And guess who will be able to use the new chic instead of the tired old? It won’t be me, let’s put it that way.
