The ASSIST PLUS pipetting robot from Integra Biosciences assists the Arbovirus Testing Laboratory at New Hampshire Public Health Laboratories in Concord, USA, to streamline sample pooling for testing for West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Lab supervisor Denise Bolton explained: “We adopted pooled testing in the summer of 2020, initially building the sample pools manually. However, the extra step complicated the workflow, required high levels of focus and concentration, and took up over an hour of analyst time. Adding a manual pooling step was also quite risky from a quality standpoint, and we were concerned about the risk of analyst error. »

“We were already familiar with the ASSIST PLUS system, as we use it for our COVID-19 samples. It was easy to write a pooling program using VIALAB software, and the flexibility of the VOYAGER 8-channel adjustable tip-spacing pipette meant that there was no need to change our processing method. mosquitoes. We use the platform to transfer aliquots of 2ml tubes into a 96-well plate to create the sample pools, then add the lysis buffer directly, using the entire pool for acid extraction nucleic. This streamlines the process, saves time, and reduces the use of plastic labware, since we are not building high volume pools and then transferring an aliquot for extraction. We saw a 75% savings on extraction and PCR reagents, and reduced PCR instrument usage for the monitoring program, while saving valuable analyst time. More importantly, we are confident that the most complex step of the process is executed error-free. »
