A 65-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly killing his son, who suffered from addiction, then hacking into his body parts and dumping them in different places in Ahmedabad.
Police say Nilesh Joshi, a resident of Ambawadi in Ahmedabad, was arrested from the Awadh Express train at a railway station in Sawai Madhopur district of Rajasthan on Saturday afternoon while traveling to the Nepalese border via Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh.
Joshi, who retired as a traffic inspector, allegedly killed his 21-year-old son Swayam at their residence on the morning of July 18 after a verbal altercation, police said. The 65-year-old allegedly cut his son’s body into six pieces using an electronic cutter and then dumped them in large plastic bags in Vasna and Ellis Bridge neighborhoods in Ahmedabad.
The discovery of body parts in uptown areas of Ahmedabad over the past three or four days has raised alarm among the public, leading to the referral of the case to the crime detection division of the Ahmedabad city police.
At a press conference held in Ahmedabad on Sunday, Premvir Singh, Police Additional Commissioner, Crime, said: “The father-son duo had fought many times, due to drug addiction issues and his alcoholism. On the morning of July 18, Swayam Joshi had a verbal altercation with his father over money. After Nilesh Joshi refused to hand over his money, a fight ensued between the two, after which Nilesh used a grinder kept in the kitchen to repeatedly hit his son in the head, resulting in his death.
The accused then bought plastic bags and an electronic cutter from a market in Kalupur and used the cutter to cut the body into six parts and packed them in polythene bags, Singh said.
“Nilesh traveled on his scooter to dump the bags in Vasna and Ellis Bridge neighborhoods in Ahmedabad. An FIR in this regard was filed at Vasna Police Station on July 20 after a human torso was found in a bag,” the additional police commissioner said.
Singh added that after the murder, Joshi tried to flee to Nepal, however, he wanted to visit Gorakhnath temple at Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh,
“Using technical analysis, we found out that the accused is present at Gangapur Railway Station in Sawai Madhopur of Rajasthan. The accused was later detained by a joint team of DCB and Railway Police. ‘accused told us that after throwing away his son’s body parts, he locked his house and left for Surat on a bus. From Surat, he boarded the Awadh Express at 2 a.m. to go to Gorakhpur in UP. We detained him at Gangapur Railway Station in Rajasthan,” Singh said.
According to the police, Joshi’s wife and daughter have been living in Germany for six years, which is why he was staying with his son.
July 18, 5 a.m.: A drunk Swayam got into an argument with his father after the latter refused to give him money. Nilesh took a grinder and hit Swayam on the head 7-8 times, bludgeoning him to death.
July 18, 10 a.m.: Joshi takes his scooter to go to Kalupur where he buys an electric cutter and plastic bags.
July 18, 12 p.m.: The accused used an electric cutter to cut the body into six parts. He threw the bags in the Vasna and Ellis Bridge areas. The next day he locked the house and took a public transport bus to Surat
July 20: A plastic bag containing a torso is found on a pile of rubbish in an open area near the Ayyappa temple in Vasna. FIR filed.
July 21: Another plastic bag containing limbs found in Ellisbridge
July 22: Police find a major clue with CCTV footage of an elderly man riding a scooter with plastic bags. Using the vehicle registration number helped the police focus on Joshi.
July 23: The police are informed that the accused is boarding the Awadh Express from Surat station at 2 am. The criminal branch contacts the railway police and the accused is detained in Rajasthan.
