Hellmann’s mayonnaise is known as something entirely different in parts of the West

(NEXSTAR) — Don’t expect to find Hellmann’s mayonnaise in supermarkets west of the Rockies.

That’s not to say West Coasters refuse to eat mayonnaise or harbor any kind of grudge against the condiment. That’s because Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, one of the most recognizable brands of mayonnaise in many parts of the country, is known as something else in parts of the West.

Check out these Best Foods mayonnaise jars:

Best Foods – a Unilever-owned brand, like Hellmann’s – is essentially the Hellmann’s of the western United States. Specifically, Best Foods and Hellmann’s are brand names for the same line of mayonnaise products. They’ve simply kept a separate brand since 1932, when Best Foods Inc. of California bought Richard Hellmann Inc. of New York, according to Unilever.

Since then, Best Foods and Hellmann’s have been offered (almost) exclusively in their respective regions.

Best Foods and Hellmann’s also maintain their own separate websites, which look almost identical outside of their Best Foods or Hellmann’s brand.

But it goes further. Fans of Best Foods and Hellmann’s have been exposed to nearly identical ad campaigns for nearly a century, including this pair of animated 1950s ads and these early ’90s ads with the same jingle and slogan. . (“Pull out the best foods and bring out the best,” one ad gleefully suggests, while the other asks consumers to “Pull out the Hellmanns and bring out the best.”)

Yet despite their shared histories and marketing, there may be a difference of opinion when it comes to the tastes of the two brands. A Unilever representative did not answer questions about their specific recipes, but an FAQ page on the former Hellmann’s website said the two products were not identical, but rather “fundamentally” identical.

“Taste preferences vary; some people find Best Foods Mayonnaise to be slightly more tangy,” according to the site’s archived FAQ page from 2002.

A comparison of the nutritional values of the two products shows that they contain the same ingredients and the same relative amounts of ingredients. Best Foods, however, has five milligrams more sodium per teaspoon than Hellmann’s, according to Unilever.

Both Hellmann’s and Best Foods jars feature notes on the labels: “Known as Best Foods West of the Rockies” or “Known as Hellmann’s East of the Rockies.” (nexstar)

In any case, the differences are small enough that the official Unilever Hellmann’s webpage claims that Hellmann’s is simply “known as Best Foods West of the Rockies”. Those who want to taste for themselves, meanwhile, can sometimes find both brands at outlets in the same city or state, as Reddit users in several places have already claimed.

“I did a side-by-side taste test once and there’s a little more [tanginess] in Best Foods than Hellmann’s,” wrote one Colorado user.
