Girl killed as heavy rain hits parts of Karnataka

Heavy rain claimed one person’s life and left a trail of destruction as it hit the coastal belt, parts of Malnad region and northern Karnataka on Monday.

Supritha, a class 1 student at Togarihankal Government Primary School in Chikkamagaluru taluk, was swept away by a stream at a coffee plantation. Efforts are underway to find her.

The Indian meteorological department has predicted heavy rains between July 5 and July 9 in the coastal belt. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the Arabian Sea.

The rain brought down trees, houses and electric poles. The heavy downpour disrupted normality in some areas. Bridges were submerged due to flash floods, while landslides and uprooted trees on many stretches of roads disrupted traffic.
