Local ice cream and chocolate maker Aglamesis Bro’s has announced it is expanding its business for the first time in 50 years.
Aglamesis Bro’s will soon open a new 7,000 square foot chocolate manufacturing facility near TQL Stadium in the West End, according to a statement. The location on Central Avenue was originally purchased in 2019 from the Costa Produce Company. Aglamesis Bro’s says it was supposed to start operations in 2020 but was put on hiatus due to COVID-19.
25 employees will be added to the production staff, which Aglamesis Bro’s says will “grow capacity more than tenfold,” allowing the company to fill orders and keep up with demand.
“We’ve spent the last 10 years avoiding advertising and promotion because we just couldn’t keep up with the demand. A large portion of our Christmas chocolate sales go to businesses that offer our boxed chocolates to staff and customers as holiday gifts. We had to turn down orders for many years because we couldn’t keep up with production from our existing stores and corporate customers,” Aglamesis Bro President and CEO Randy Young said in a statement. .
According to the statement, this expansion was carried out with “special attention,” as Aglamesis Bro’s put it, the company produces in small batches and refuses to sacrifice quality.
This new production facility is slated to open this fall, and Aglamesis Bro’s says it hopes to see no disruption to production during the transition.
“What I want to emphasize the most is that we are not changing the traditional methods of making our chocolates; we just do more with more space to work,” says Young.
In recent years, Aglamesis Bro’s has seen quite a few changes. Long time owner James Aglamesis died in January 2021 at the age of 93. “Jim” or “Mr. A,” ran the family chain of ice cream parlors for more than 60 years. The century-old ice cream brand was founded by Greek immigrants Thomas and Nicholas Aglamesis, respectively the father and Jim’s uncle Jim took over the business in the 1950s and continued to oversee it until recent years, when he passed its management to third and fourth generation family members.
In August 2021, the Cincinnati City Council voted unanimously to give Allston Street in Oakley, where the original Aglamesis Bro storefront still operates, the honorary secondary name of James T. Aglamesis Way.
Aglamesis Bro’s is located at 3046 Madison Road, Oakley and 9899 Montgomery Road, Montgomery. Find more information about aglamesis.com.
