Mumbai: At least 20 people have died, 14 of them by drowning, in separate incidents during the immersion of Ganesh idols in parts of Maharashtra, police said on Saturday.
The 10-day Ganesh festival, which started on August 31, ended on Friday.
In Wardha district, three people drowned in Sawangi, while another died in the same way in Devli, an official said.
Two people drowned in a pond in Yavatmal district during the immersion of an idol, he said.
In Ahmednagar district, two people drowned in separate incidents in Supa and Belvandi, he said, adding that two others died in Jalgaon district in northern Maharashtra, one in Chalisgaon and one to Jamner.
One person died each in Ghodegaon and Yavat in Pune district, Dhule district, Lonikand in Satara district and Solapur town, he said.
Four people died in a road accident in Sakkardara district of Nagpur city during Ganesh’s immersion, he said.
In Thane, a 55-year-old woman was killed and four others injured after a tree collapsed on a Ganesh pandal in the Kolbad area due to heavy rain. The incident happened Friday night, a city official said.
“A huge tree fell on the pandal while the ‘aarti’ of the idol of Lord Ganesh was lit as part of its immersion. The wife, Rajashri Walavalkar, was seriously injured in the accident. She and other Other injured were rushed to hospital, where she was pronounced dead,” the official said.
Meanwhile, at least 11 people, including a nine-month-old child, were injured after suffering an electric shock in Panvel in Raigad district during a motorcade. The incident happened on Friday evening in Wadghar Koliwada after a cable from an electric generator broke, an official said.
“At least 11 people, who were part of the procession, came into contact with the cable and were injured. Among the injured are four children,” he said.
While some of them were rushed to a private hospital, others were taken to a public hospital in Panvel, he said, adding that all were responding well to treatment.
Some incidents related to the law and order situation were also reported in parts of the state during the dumping.
A fight broke out between supporters of Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Shiv Sena Chairman Uddhav Thackeray in Tophkhana, Ahmednagar district, an official said.
In Jalgaon, a group of people threw stones at the mayor’s bungalow during the Ganesh immersion procession, he said, while a clash broke out between two groups at Mundhwa in the city of Pune . A scuffle took place in Shikrapur, Pune district over the bursting of firecrackers, while in Chandrapur a scuffle was reported between Ganesh Mandal volunteers and police officers, he added. .
In Mumbai, the Ganesh festival and immersion procession passed off peacefully with no untoward incidents reported, police said.
