Vehicle access will be prohibited in several parts of Bath

Vehicle access will be restricted in parts of Bath following ‘strong support’ from residents.

Measures to reduce through traffic are planned for Southlands, Church Road, Royal Victoria Park and Cork Street/Tennyson Road following further consultation as Bath and North East Somerset Council begins its £2.2million rollout sterling of habitable quarters.

In other areas, it will work with residents to co-design programs and consult further on resident parking areas where there has been local support.

The results of a recent consultation on the 15 priority areas showed support from 51% of the 1,600 people who responded, while 36% were neutral and 13% opposed.

Deputy head of council Sarah Warren, cabinet member for climate and sustainable travel, said: ‘We will now move quickly to trial programs in areas where there was strong support and the potential program is simple to implement. Once we come up with ready designs, we’ll check them out.”

In addition to Bath Streets, access restrictions will be designed for Queen Charlton Lane in Whitchurch, while other measures will be co-designed.

“In other livable neighborhood areas, we will also begin work on the next stage of co-designing programs with communities in response to specific issues raised by residents. Please find details of events in your area and please participate,” Ms Warren added.

The consultation report says that if developed in collaboration with communities, livable neighborhoods can transform “noisy, polluted or dangerous streets into pleasant, safe and healthy places to live and work”. Measures may include modal filters, one-way streets, time-limited access, width restrictions and speed limits, although residents are not restricted from driving in their neighborhoods.

The results of the consultation revealed support for changes aimed at improving pedestrian safety, traffic calming and improving cycling infrastructure. However, one of the main concerns raised was the potential impact of the programs on neighboring areas.

Ms Warren said: “I really want to emphasize that we will be paying careful attention to the needs of all groups in the next phase of consultation and co-design. We are very aware that programs have the potential to impact neighboring areas and we want to ensure equitable access for all, so we create healthier spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Co-design will begin in March in Temple Cloud and the following areas of Bath:

  • Mount Road in Southdown;
  • the area bounded by Sydney Place, Great Pulteney Street, St Johns Road and Bathwick Street;

RPZs will be developed for Walcot, including Snow Hill; Beacon Road, Mount Beacon, Richmond Place; Zion Hill/Summerhill Road; St John’s Road, Edward Street, Audley Grove, St Michael’s Road, Audley Avenue, Cork Street, Hungerford Road; entrance hill; Chelsea Road, Kennington Road, Warwick Road, Foxcombe Road, Park Road, Lyme Road, Charmouth Road, Lyme Gardens.

The Entry Hill RPZ is moving forward despite opposition from 55 and support from just 17. After a map showed it could include Hansford Square, residents said the parking controls were ‘outrageous and unnecessary and a “total overreaction”.

A council timetable indicates that after the plans are developed, a final public consultation on the projects will take place this summer.
