Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel appeared on the “Bussin with the Boys” podcast this week and told us one of the craziest recruiting stories I’ve ever heard.
Heupel told co-hosts Taylor Lewan and Will Compton of a recruiting trip that ended with his vehicle being stripped.

“My first time as a full-time coach being on the road, I’m going to be out for three straight weeks,” Heupel explained. “[I] I have a nice Cadillac, I mean a luxury vehicle, floating on the road, in good condition. End up going to a Nike combine, coaches could always go, I’m at the University of Houston. I park my car, I’m going to go see the combine harvester.
“This area of Houston is a little tough. I come out three hours later and my Caddy is completely stripped. Nothing is left. It’s also my first weekend there. So for the next two weeks, I’m going from school to school without hubcaps. Nothing on my car, just driving down the road.
I would have liked to see the look on Heupel’s face when he came out and saw that his car had been stripped. It’s hilarious now, but I bet at the time, Heupel didn’t see the humor in it like he does years later.
I’m sure Heupel (along with most college football coaches) has a treasure trove of amazing recruiting stories from his time as an assistant coach/head coach.
If that’s the one he’s willing to tell publicly, I can’t imagine some of the other stories he probably has. Hopefully one day we will hear more stories from Heupel on the road.
