Johnny Depp and Amber Heard are back in court as he sues his ex-wife for $50 million.

He claims she defamed him in a 2018 Washington Post opinion piece while writing about being a survivor of domestic violence.

While the article didn’t refer to Johnny by name, his legal team says the reference was clear and hurt his reputation and movie career.

The former couple had been together for about five years before their tumultuous divorce became official in 2017.

Amber’s character is called Chenault, a woman married to another man, who forms a relationship with Paul.

Reflecting on the film, Amber told Vogue in 2011 that working with Johnny was “torture” because it was better than she ever imagined, which “really says something”.

When did they get engaged?

In early 2014, Amber was seen wearing an engagement ring estimated to be five carats and cost around $100,000.

However, she was later spotted wearing two more engagement rings throughout the year.

Johnny himself opened up about a diamond ring he wore in a video interview with The Daily Mail calling it a “chick ring”.

He confirmed their engagement, saying, “It’s probably a dead giveaway, isn’t it? Not very subtle.

He later told David Letterman on his late night talk show that it was Amber’s original engagement ring but was “too big” for her, so he decided to put it on and it suited him.

Amber was seen wearing a slightly smaller diamond ring that had a diamond-studded bezel set on a band with scrollwork.

The third ring was seen when she walked the Cannes Film Festival red carpet. It looked more like her first ring but with two pear-shaped stones added to the sides.

How was their marriage?

The couple tied the knot in a private ceremony on a beach in the Bahamas in 2015.

Amber wore a floor-length white dress with long sleeves and a dramatic veil while Johnny chose a white suit jacket, black pants and white dress shoes.

How did their relationship end?

Amber filed for divorce from Johnny on May 23, 2016 while also obtaining a temporary restraining order against him.

She alleged that he physically assaulted her during their relationship and said it usually happened while he was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The actress alleged that Johnny threw a phone at her, which left a bruise on her face.

A police spokesperson told People at the time that they investigated the radio call of the domestic incident, but found no crime had taken place.

Johnny denied Amber’s accusations through her reps, saying she was “trying to get a premature financial resolution by alleging abuse.”

What was their divorce settlement?

The couple officially divorced on January 13, 2017, with Amber overturning her claim for $50,000 a month in spousal support and receiving $7 million.

She also withdrew her request for a domestic violence restraining order.

They released a joint statement which said: “Our relationship was intensely passionate and at times volatile, but always bound by love. Neither party made false accusations for financial gain. There was never any intent to harm physically or emotionally.
